Family Crest Signet Rings

We can engrave family crests or coat of arms, serving as a symbol of your heritage and identity. Our seal engraving is done by hand, ensuring a traditional deep seal is achieved.

Our range of handmade signet rings can be engraved with finely-detailed lettering and family crests, becoming a symbol of both personal style and family heritage. Engraved signet rings are available in both solid gold and sterling silver, and in both traditional cushion shapes and classic oval designs. Find out more about family crest signet rings.

What are Family Crests?

Family crests, also known as ‘coat of arms’, date back to the times of knights in shining armour. When battles and jousting matches were regular occurrences, Heralds, or announcers, would introduce knights at jousting competitions, and spectators could distinguish each knight by the design adorning his shield, helmet and armour. This design was his crest. Medieval illustrations of knights and their horses show that the horses’ gear was often decorated with the same design too.

In those days, crests were passed down in the family for the same uses, as time has gone on, these crests have formed symbolic artforms now used as representation to family names. They have become especially popular when incorporated into family crest signet rings.

Our Process

With over 235 years of experience, Deakin & Francis has established itself as not only Britain’s oldest family-owned jewellers, but also the world’s leading manufacturer of fine jewellery and luxury accessories, including family crest signet rings.

Our signet rings are all made using a traditional method of stamping from a solid block of gold or platinum, transforming to a beautiful polished signet ring. Our rings are made by our talented craftsmen using only hand and eye, including all engravings whether they are deep seal or initial engraving.

Engraving Types

What's the difference between hand-engraved and seal engraved?

Traditionally in reverse, ‘seal’ engraving is cut to an increased depth to allow the ring to create positive wax impressions. Historically this method was used for sealing letters, enabling you to prove something was from you. Hand-engraved is used more commonly for initials, the engraving is shallower in comparison to the deep seal engraving, however it is still deep enough to really make the design pop.

For Future Generations

Wax Seal Impression

Alongside your signet ring order, we will produce a 3D wax seal impression of your signet ring, to keep for future generations. Traditionally, the signet ring would be used to with hot wax to imprint a distinctive seal of authenticity. In order for the seal to be the ‘correct’ way round, all seal engraved family crest signet rings are engraved on the reverse.
